It was a fascinating read for the subject, Gandhi, but the writing just felt slow halfway through. He had little patience for meretricious consistency and his morality grew and matured to become the Mahatma whose gentleness pried the grip of the British talon loose. He led the fight for Indian independence from British rule, who tirelessly pursued a strategy of passive resistance, and who was assassinated by a Hindu fanatic only a few months after independence was achieved. After that he went to Delhi where Muslims were being slaughtered by Hindus and Sikhs. On January 30, 1948, Gandhi ate his last meal at 4:30pm.
There, he founded the Natal Indian Congress, an organization that fought for Indian rights in South Africa. The life in England was very foreign for Gandhi. Karamchand Gandhi, the Mahatma's father, was a politician who served as prime minister in the small realms of Porbandar, Rajkot and Wankaner, all in the west of India; his mother, Putlibai, was a devout and illiterate Hindu woman. He mentions how his life did not start until after college. His steadfast determination to achieve democracy through non violent, non co-operative protests is what made him immortal. Louis Fischer clearly loved Mahatma Gandhi. Gandhi was a hero of my first teacher, my mother, and in reading this book, I now see that much of how she strove to raise me came from his example and teaching.

This book has clearly been well maintained and looked after thus far. He even adopted the daughter Lakshmi as his own. Renunciation of all desire of action was ultimate message, he writes. He insisted that the family stays at the ashram. What sort of fanatic should one call him, the killer who did not know the difference? Not only did Fischer visit Gandhi once, but also he visited him a second time. Real change cannot be imagined otherwise.
The following section devotes more thought to his methods and his message to fellow Indians and to the world. Jesus possessed a great force, the love force, but Christianity became disfigured when it went to the West. When the communal riots broke out between Hindus and Muslims after partition in 1947, Gandhi went to Calcutta where the situation was the worst. Is a violent response to evil ever justifiable? The reason I read that many pages was I was waiting for the book to get interesting but frankly it didn't. I give a five star rating to this book. That is, he was not only outstanding in every way, but also very human in his thoughts.
