These colleges are not community colleges and they are not inferior to universities. Those are the qualities that liberal-arts colleges foster. After nearly a decade of tepid economic growth and increasing college costs, families are rightfully concerned about the return on investment that comes from a college education. President Obama has publicly disparaged art history majors because their chances of earning more money after graduation than, say, an engineer, appear on the surface to be lower. Part of this process lies in the collaborative nature of the education at these colleges.
By exploring why liberal arts colleges have produced a disproportionate share of MacArthur Fellows, we might gain insights into how to incubate exceptional creativity more broadly. A high priority is placed on the development of critical thinking skills and the abilities to distinguish opinions from facts and to discern good ideas from bad. It sure is interesting to know that a liberal arts college will be able to provide students with a close-knit community. Through the speech that the students will write and perform, they will be able to achieve what they have stood out to do and they will be able to save their local art center. We expect and challenge our students to be people of integrity and character who discover what they are called to do in the world.
Students that do choose to pursue a liberal arts education may benefit from completing a certificate, minor or second major in a technical education area. These valuable skills, practiced and reiterated throughout the entire college experience, are the skills necessary to innovate and create meaningful change in the world. They are capable of thinking and acting globally and locally. MacArthur Fellows graduated from both private and public universities, from engineering schools, specialized colleges in art and music, and a school of theology. Some experts and government officials advocate for students to pursue a much narrower college curriculum targeted at a clearly defined career opportunity.
However, until then, there will be a social stigma surrounding the liberal arts and will tend to make potential students have some doubt in pursuing a major in this area.
